Kültürpark

Kültürpark is one of the rare green public spaces in İzmir city centre. In addition to permanent installations for use during İzmir International Fairs, arts and exhibition centers, sports areas, and other facilities. Kültürpark area is also remarkable for its bushes and trees that have been inventoried among the richnesses of İzmir.

Abstracting a favourite tree in Kültürpark, using appropriate abstraction techniques. In this exercise, we are trying to understand the difference between representation and abstraction.

Producing a 2D pattern abstracted from a unique physical feature of the particular tree we have documented with our notes, sketches and photographs during our visit to Kültürpark.

Now colouring our 2D compositions on white cardboard using a meaningfully selected colour scheme in reference to the colour lecture.

Abstracting Design

In this exercise, we are producing a Promotion Poster, a 3D Visualization, and a 3D Modular Composition on the basis of our research outcomes and group visit to Sasalı Natural Life Park.

The Poster and 3D Visualization will aim to promote Sasalı Park and involve a bird, a mammal, and a reptile from the attached list of animals living in the park. As in the earlier exercise, the listed animals will be distributed equally in our working groups.

Starting our preparations by research on the three animals assigned to us, collecting information on their formal characteristics. Since we may not be able to observe the animals closely during the Sasalı visit, this preparatory research may be vital for our progress.

Body Movement in Space

In groups four, we are assigning a particular set of visualizations and choreagraphy, as published in the CMS, for the following four tango pieces, by the renown Turkish artist, tango dancer and teacher Murat Erdemsel.

The visualizations will help us in analyzing the musicality of the pieces. Erdemsel's choreographies are directly built on there analyses, in terms of his selection of particular figures and movements.

Selecting four sequences from the performance. The selection should be of sequences of horizontal displacement in space through which the performers move from one location to another.

For an earlier exercise, we already visited Kültürpark. It is currently on the local agenda due to a renovation plan by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality. In this exercise, we are going to focus on Kültürpark's cultura values to promote them with an information board.

Boxing Light

Producing two square prisms, 3 spheres, and 2 cybes solid by grey cardboard by omitting two surfaces.

Making two 3D-Compositions inside two prisms each according to a clear design idea such as hierarchy, balance, centrality, etc. Using 3 spheres, 2 cybes, and 7 sticks in total inside two design fields from the compositions according to the vectors perpendicular to omitted surfaces. Rules are solid should not touch the surfaces of prisms and fixed by the sticks without gume.

Covering one of the open surfaces of each of the prisms we have earlier produced with grey cardboard. This surface is going to be our Projection Screen.

Enhance our design idea by introducing a selected scheme of complementary colours.

Spatial Gift to Edirne

Edirne is a city located at the north west of Turkey with its still-standing stunning architectural monuments from the Roman and Ottoman periods. The city was an Ottoman capital for 92 years before İstanbul. At this important gate between Asia and Europe, Ottoman Sultans had grand building complexes constructed to influence pilgrims and represent their hegemonic power. Edirne's multicultural history is reflected in various building types also magnificent governmental and civic buildings by the Ottoman architect Sinan the Great from the 16th century, whose Selimiye Complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.

We are going to produce a Spatial Gift on the basis of the formal, structural and contextual analyses of the built environments we have experienced and documented in a spatial catalogue of the technical trip to Edirne.

The Spatial Gift is a self-standing structure consisting of 7 spatial components: two main spaces, transitional spaces, and trails a lont a route.

Festival in Campus

Modularity is an approach that is widely employed in many product designs. In this exercise, we will explore these potentials of modular design by creating a spatial composition of a distinct physical space characteristic.

In this first step of this exercise, we are exploring the structural logic in modular systems by analyzing a simple example from the list. We are working in groups of four, to produce an info poster and a free-scale working model of the design elements, modules and rules in the system.

We will continue exploring the structural logic of modular systems by complementary research on simple modular examples to analyze possibilities of one of them. We will work individually and produce an info poster.

After the introduction we had on the physical characterictics of space, we are now ready to work individually on a spatial scenario incolving one spatial characteristic/form, for the seleted/assigned location in IZTECH festival Area.

Festival in City

In this assignment, we are going to design an information unit of a local event and a small accommodation for a specific artist. Our proposal will be located in an empty plot in Antalya Kaleiçi. Registered as an urban site, Kaleici's traditional architectural character will be a reference for our design.

As a group work in Antalya, we have to produce a site analysis poster that displays socio-physical characteristics of three sites we have chosen for our proposals. In order to decide which three sites we are going to focus, we first need to do a space hunting for the sites. After then, we may decide the three sites of our group. In our site analysis poster, we need to analytically support the reason of your site choices as a group.

After our spatial hunting in Inner Citadel Antalya, we have to select three alternative sits for designing an information centre having an accommodation unit.

In our design we have to match the alternative sites with the participant of a particular festival group. Our matching can be between three.
